28.05.08 ROVERS WIN DOUG MASLING TROPHY
To celebrate the life of the late Doug Masling, his beloved Charlton Kings AFC took on local rivals Charlton Rovers AFC in a memorial
match as part of the Charlton Kings festival.
In what will hopefully be the first of an annual event, the teams took to the pitch on a very wet and windy Bank Holiday Monday.
It was Rovers who made the first probing attacks and with almost half an hour gone, Manager/Captain for the day, Tom Price ran down
the left wing and squared the ball to Matt Chilvers to open the scoring with a neatly placed shot into the bottom right corner.
Just before half time though, Charlton Kings hit back with their number 2, striking the ball perfectly from 25 yards into the
corner of the Rovers goal. 1-1 at half time. The second half got under way, and again Rovers made the early attacks, and with
Charlie Homer on the wing, a well crafted individual goal was taken as he ran into the box onto a through ball from Tom Price
and curled the ball into the Kings net from an acute angle. With the second goal, came a strong surge from Rovers as Matt Masling,
Grandson of Doug sprinted down the wing and dinked the ball into the area, to be met by the head of Mark Herbert. At 3-1 the game
was almost over, as the weather seemed to sap the mental strength of Kings as well as any killing edge that Rovers may have had,
but there was time for Johnny Adams to get a fourth. Matt Masling again got down the left wing and cut the ball back to the edge
of the box for Kinky Adams to slot home.
Final score 4-1, but despite the final score the game was played in a very friendly manner and was enjoyed by all despite
the weather. Tommy Price accepted the Doug Masling trophy in what was his first piece of silver wear as a manager. Hopefully
the first of many. Well done to all those involved as it was an enjoyable morning, and thanks to Tom Masling for organising it
in remembrance of his father.
Charlton Rovers Squad: Chris Courtney-Smith, Rich Berry, Tom Price, Joe Price, Mark Herbert, Charlie Homer, Tom Green,
Dave Payne, John Adams, Adam Gyde, Matt Chilvers, Marc Beedon, James Kerr, Jordan Cooper, Matt Masling, Steve Rogers.

23.11.07: Saturday Club News
Christmas Break - The last Saturday this term is 15th December – We resume on 5th January 08.
Games Coming Up - Very soon we will be able to test our new skills against other teams. In the new year we will have games every other week (on average) for both U7s and U8s. We will be playing against teams from Cirencester, St Marks, Gotherington, Bishops Cleeve, Lakeside and Leckhampton … plus others. The games kick off with Cirencester U8s (YR3) coming to us on 8th December. They will bring two teams, and we will select a squad of around 20 players for the game. For those not involved in the games, the Saturday Club continues as normal. We will need mums / dads to help with transport and supervision during away games – please let me know if you can help.
Girls Football - We have tried to attract more girls to Saturday Club, and would love to have a girls team in the league in a year or twos time. We do have 5 or 6 girls this year, but the numbers dwindle if they find they are greatly outnumbered by the boys. Well please bear with us. We have recently met with the Gloucestershire FA, and between us, the FA and the 6 x local schools we are planning to run a series of training sessions for girls only during the winter term. We hope to get a large group of girls interested in football, with a view having a girls section at Saturday Club from September. When I know more I will let you know.
Kit - Historically, we have held a stock of club shorts /socks for sale to the Saturday Club children, and we plan to do this again. I have placed an order for a stock of shorts / socks which I hope to have in the next week or so … in time for Christmas … the cost for socks is £ 4.00 and shorts £ 6.00 – if you buy them as a set we will do it for £ 10.00 ……… we will include our range of kit, including training tops on the new website in due course.
